Membership Application 2009
Overview
Lead101, which stands for Leading, Educating, and Developing the University of Florida is a member of the Center for Leadership and Service, a component of the Dean of Students Office in 202 Peabody Hall.
Lead101 peer educators provide and promote the skills and knowledge necessary to explore, discover, and apply leadership practices through workshops, role modeling, resources, service, and conferences.
Our mission is accomplished through a variety of methods:
Conferences
Lead101 currently provides two conferences to the UF community, The Art of Leadership (AOL) Conference during the fall semester and the Gator Institute of Leadership Development (GILD) Conference held in the spring. Both conferences are wonderful opportunities for student leaders to brush up on their skills, develop new leadership methods and practices, network with peers, and finally, get the opportunity to hear from distinguished speakers who serve as established leaders and professionals. The key is not simply to better enable participants to lead their organizations, but to reach and even extend their leadership potential both at UF and in any and all future endeavors. Lead101 is also working on a potential third conference to be held during the fall which will focus on developing the leadership of local high school students here in Gainesville and Alachua County.
Workshops
We present on a variety of workshops related to leadership ranging from "Diversity" to "General Leadership Skills" to "Group Development," from specific well-known workshops to custom-made presentations catering to a particular need. We present to anyone, from organizations to academic classes, to individual students. In the past, members have developed their own workshops as part of the Lead101 class that new members take in the fall, EDA4930, Leadership Issues & Theory.
Service
As members of the Center for Leadership & Service, we feel it is important to emphasize in our organizational activities the intertwined nature of leadership and service. When we lead, we serve those who follow us. When we serve, we lead toward a better tomorrow. We cannot fully have one without the other. Lead101 puts its best foot forward when its members participate in the service projects of the CLS. Additionally, Lead101's outreach committee organizes a group service project roughly each month. We consider service vital for effective leaders.
Resources
In addition to our personal services, we also provide materials that may be of use to the UF community. These include our Lead101 info sheets which serve as very brief overviews of certain leadership styles and issues. Currently we have fifteen available tip sheets and are currently working toward creating more. Members create their own tip sheets as part of the leadership class required of all Lead101 new members.
Role Modeling
As members of Lead101 we are expected to be leaders at all times. In more famous words, we believe we should "be the change we wish to see in the world." Lead101 members are expected to carry with them a high sense of integrity and moral character.
