Florida Alternative Breaks
Florida Alternative Breaks, or FAB, is a University of Florida student-led organization that sends out service-learning trips based on specific social issues during academic breaks. We believe education, strong direct service, and reflection are among several key components that set the FAB experience apart in terms of growth and impact, both for our participants and the communities we serve.

“FAB has been such an incredible experience. I’ve learned something new on each service trip I’ve been on. I credit FAB for meeting really cool people, doing really incredible service, and motivating me to pursue the prospects of global medicine. FAB has been such a major part of my undergraduate experience, and I cannot wait to see how it impacts me as I graduate and go on to future studies and adventures."
--Rebecca Le (2012-13 Community Development Site Leader)
“FAB is absolutely incredible. It has such a unique mission and structure, and it really does its best to improve itself to the point of perfection. From someone who is usually a very harsh critic, FAB lived up to all its seemingly dramatic and cliché compliments. I am so lucky to have experienced it, and so thankful that I got to take a leading role in it. More important than the actual trips are the lasting impacts which FAB has – both in the relationships formed and the personal progress made. Those stay with you forever.”
--Nancy Masood (2012-13 Disaster Recovery Site Leader)
“Whenever I go home to visit my family and friends, the place where all my stories come from is FAB. It has been the one thing I have been excited for since the first half of my first semester at UF. I really found a niche with these trips and all the people who go on them and all the FABulous people who are responsible for making them happen....
My trip this past year was the highlight of my sophomore year. I met people I will never forget, and I really feel like we made a difference. I am more inspired than ever to continue working towards becoming an active citizen.”
--Cara Snider (2012-13 HIV/AIDS Site Leader)
“FAB is a unique organization in that students from all different backgrounds are united with the goal of social change. Personally, my trip had a wide variety of majors, backgrounds, and interests, yet we all came together to learn, serve, and grow as active citizens. We learned not only from our service and education aspects of our trip, but also from each other.... While just one experience, FAB facilitates and encourages these types of exchanges and works to promote student growth through service, education, and reflection with all participants. As a result, my experience with FAB has led to a desire to affect broad change and work to make a difference in the lives of others.”
